On 2015 the Supreme Court allowed the state governments to ban sale of lottery. It refused to recognize the right to sell lottery as fundamental right. Now, barring 13 states, sale of lottery is banned at other places. Lotteries are hugely popular in states like Maharashtra, Mizoram, Kerala, Nagaland and Sikkim.
Legal Status of Lotteries in India
There is no absolute ban on lotteries across the country. But, only 13 states allow lotteries. These are Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland and Mizoram.
The Nagaland State Lottery Result or Lottery Sambad Result is eagerly awaited in the state. Same is the case with Mizoram state lottery result, Sikkim state lottery result or Kerala lottery result.
The former major centers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have completely banned lotteries. The ban on lotteries began at the turn of the century, when social activists raised concerns about people becoming addicted to gambling, ruining families.
Although the state governments received good revenue from lotteries, the social cost of continuing the practice was considered too high.
Is the Lottery ban in effect states?
The ban on lotteries is not very effective as they operate online and operators have introduced a number of tricks such as ‘single-digit’ matches, which receive small prizes announced daily. Large weekly prizes are announced separately.
There are also many illegal lotteries, which are being operated by anonymous players.
