History of Indiana lottery
The Hoosier Lottery came about in November 1988 when voters approved the Indiana Lottery referendum. Just one year later, scratch-off games went on sale.
On October 28, 1989, the first episode of the Hoosier Millionaire was televised and had a successful run all the way through to November 2005. Indiana then joined Lotto America in October 1990 and started selling Powerball lottery tickets in 1992.
The state started selling Mega Millions tickets at the beginning of 2010. Proceeds from the Indiana Lottery go toward supporting pensions for the state’s firefighters and police force. Profits from ticket sales also go to the Build Indiana Fund and the Teachers’ Retirement Fund. Players must be 18 years old or older to play and claim prizes in the Hoosier Lottery.
