Before Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri moved into their dream home – the coveted Mannat, they lived in a 3BHK, sea-facing apartment in Bandra – a more modest house than their lavish bungalow. It was in 1997 when he revealed pictures of the property on the famous Simi Grewal talk show that the couple had attended with their newborn baby Aryan Khan. This was also the time when Shah Rukh Khan drove the Red Pajero and did not have the best sedans and SUVs in its class. There is a lot about Mannat that you probably still don’t know, including the price of the property when King Khan bought it in 2001.

Interestingly, it was also the requirement of a unique prayer room that led to Khan investing in a bungalow in Mumbai. According to Zoom TV, Khan wanted to build a prayer room on his own terms and it required a big space.

Talking to a radio station in 2019, Shah Rukh Khan revealed one of the many reasons why a move to Mannat was necessary, timely and executed. Here’s what he said, “I am from Delhi and Delhiites have the concept of living in a kothi (bungalow). In Mumbai, the concept is to live in apartments, but in Delhi, even if one is not well off, they still own a small bungalow. When I came to Mumbai, I was already married and was living in a small apartment with my wife Gauri. My mother-in-law would keep saying, ‘You live in such a small house.’ Eventually, when I saw Mannat, it felt like that Delhi wala kothi and so I bought it and that was the most expensive thing I bought.” Safe to say, Mannat is one of the best “kothis” in the city now.

There are reports that also suggest that the bungalow first caught SRK’s attention during the shooting of his movie Yes Boss, in 1997. Before Shah Rukh Khan bought the property it was owned by a Gujarati businessman, Nariman Dubash and registered in the name of Bai Khorshed Bhanu Sanjana Trust. Named Villa Vienna, the bungalow was sold to Shah Rukh Khan for Rs 13.32 crore in 2001. In 2005, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri renamed the home Mannat.
