A casual walk in lower Manhattan just got a little more interesting. A huge statue of a woman’s head can now be seen while walking along the Hudson River.
The massive structure called ‘Waters Soul’ stands 80 feet tall and is now on the Jersey City waterfront, where the woman can be seen with her index finger over her mouth. Although it seems like the woman is silencing New York, artist Jaime Plansa says it’s not meant to be.
Plensa says that it symbolizes calm and sympathetic self-reflection and that “a drop of water is all alone, like a lonely person, but many drops can form a tidal wave, and form vast rivers and oceans.” When individuals come together to exchange ideas and create communities, we can create something incredibly powerful,” according to a press release.
Plensa chose the location of the statue because of its proximity to the water. He said in a statement that “we must come together to protect water as one of the most precious elements of nature. It is not owned by anyone but belongs to all of us. Water is the source of life, and ‘ ‘Spirit of Water’ is a celebration of life.”
The structure was built with polyester resin, fiberglass and marble dust at Plansa’s Barcelona studio and was shipped to the U.S. in 23 containers, according to Reuters. was shipped.
“Water’s Soul” is Plansa’s greatest piece of art to date and has been slowly put together since August, evoking the curiosity of many onlookers. It will have its grand opening ceremony Thursday at the Newport development on the Hudson River in Jersey City.
