Tata Motors is reviving the popular Safari brand name. It will launch the Tata Gravitas as the new Tata Safari this month. Booking of the new SUV will start next week and delivery will also start in January 2021.
The new Tata Safari will compete between the likes of MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500. And we expect the base XE trim to start at Rs. 15 lakh ex-showroom. But Trulia expecting that the new Safari will cost around a lakh more than the Tata Harrier.
According to Tata Motors, the Gravitas was always about to be launched as the Safari. And its signs were in its design. The roof terrace and theater-like seating – not to mention the glass panels in the roof – are signs that safaris have always known. And this is equally evident in the Gravitas that were last displayed at Auto Expo.
The new Tata Safari will sit atop the Harrier – on which it is based in terms of pricing. It will also get the same options as the drivetrain. It will come with a 170bhp diesel engine with both a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox. However, it will not come with all wheel drive (another strong safari feature). What’s more, the new Safari also won’t talk much about the turbo-petrol engine at launch.
Tata Motors says that both these options can sport the new Safari. The platform on which the new Safari is located is after all the Land Rover platform that has been designed and executed for all wheel drive. All-wheel drive can also be achieved by electrification, says Tata, in which the motor drives its rear wheels.
